Fun Kids Crafts: Melting chocolate

This is one of our fun kids crafts that needs to be done with adult supervision. The kids love this one as they get to eat the chocolate when they are done. Make sure that you do not overheat the chocolate and also make very sure that no water or any other liquid drips in the chocolate as it will make the chocolate go lumpy. Beware of the steam! Later we can try and let the kids do more elaborate chocolate crafts, but for now lets just do this simple one.

What you need for this craft:

  • Brown cooking chocolate chips (about 5oz. should be enough)
  • White cooking chocolate chips (about 5oz. should be enough)
  • A baking tray
  • Two glass bowls
  • A saucepan filled with water (the correct size so the glass bowls will fit over it)
  • Baking parchment to line the baking tray
  • Spoon to stir the chocolate
  • Two teaspoons
  • Two tooth picks
  • Oven mitts.

This is how you do this easy kids craft:

  1. Line your baking tray with baking parchment.
  2. Put the chocolate chips in the bowls.
  3. Fill your saucepan with water and heat it until the water bubbles.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat.
  5. Whilst wearing oven mitts, carefully put the bowl of brown milk chocolate on the saucepan.
  6. Stir the chocolate until it is melted.
  7. Lift the bowl out of the saucepan wearing your oven mitts.
  8. Now you place the bowl of white chocolate chips on the saucepan and stir until it is melted.
  9. If the water get cold, reheat it a little but, make very sure that your chocolate never touches the boiling water as it burns very easily.
  10. With your teaspoon, put drops of the brown chocolate on the tray, use about 3/4 of the chocolate.
  11. Spread them with your teaspoon to form circles.
  12. Now using the other teaspoon drop the same amount of white chocolate on the baking tray.
  13. Spread them with your teaspoon to form circles.
  14. Now you drop small amounts of withe chocolate on the brown chocolate and make little patterns with your tooth pick.
  15. Do the same with the brown chocolate on the white.
  16. Place your chocolate in the refrigerator until it is set (it must not set too fast.)
  17. When your chocolate rounds have set, lift them of off the baking tray and store them in an airtight container in the fridge and consume them within a week.
