Crafting With Your Teen

Crafting With Your Teen

Most kids love to do craft. They are happy to make anything from paper plate animals to macaroni necklaces. But once they hit the teen years, many of them thin

k they're too old (or too cool) for crafting.

Crafting with your kids is a great way to bond with them, and this is especially important during the busy teen years. If you can find a craft that your teenager will find both enjoyable and worthwhile, you'll have a much better chance of talking him or her into giving it a try. And by the time it's completed, she'll probably be ready to create something else. Here are some craft ideas that your teen might like to try.

1. Jewelry

Teen girls and boys both like jewelry, and making it by hand can give them unique pieces that will be the envy of their friends. There are all sorts of ways to create jewelry, from simple beading to hemp macramé to wire jewelry making. There's sure to be a project out there that will fit your teen's style.

2. Tie-dying

Tie-dyed t-shirts are a perennial favorite of teenagers. They're very easy to make, requiring only fabric dye, some rubber bands, and a washing machine or l

arge tub. You can also tie-dye other items such as socks and scarves.

3. Decoupage

You can create all sorts of distinctive home décor items by decoupaging. Your teen might like to make decoupaged jewelry boxes, desk accessories, and furniture for their rooms. Such items also make wonderful gifts for him to give to friends and family.

4. Knitting

Once reserved for elderly ladies, knitting has become quite popular among the younger crowd. This is probably due in part to all of the trendy fashions that one can create by knitting. Yarn comes in a variety of colors and textures, and there are plenty of patterns available that appeal to teens.

5. Candles

It's very easy to create layered jar candles. You can melt down remnants of used candles and pour them into jars to create new ones. If your teen wants to create something a bit more complex, there are kits on the market that include everything they need to get started.

6. Clocks

If you have a clock movement, you can create a clock out of almost any hard material. Clay, wood and paper mache are some of the most popular things to make clocks out of. Your teen can even make a hip clock out of an old CD or record.

It's easy for us to think that our teens have out

grown crafting, but it's simply a matter of presenting them with the right thing. There are lots of crafts that you and your teen can participate in together, creating not only a tangible finished product, but also a wonderful memory for both of you.

Kids Craft Ideas - Crafting With Your Toddler

Kids Craft Ideas - Crafting With Your Toddler

With toddlers in the house you need lots of Kids Craft Ideas. One thing that most toddlers have in common is that they love to make things. Simple projects keep their minds occupied and give them a sense of accomplishment. Crafting can also be extremely helpful in developing hand-eye coordination as well as small motor skills.

Crafting with your toddler is fun and rewarding for both of you. Here are some kids craft ideas that are appropriate for a toddler's skill level and attention span.

1. Paper bag puppets

This craft is fun to make and fun to play with when it's done. Your child can make a simple one that requires no scissors or small parts by drawing a face on the base of the bag with crayons or markers. If you want to go more elaborate, you could help your child add googly eyes and construction paper ears, noses and limbs.

2. Floating sailboats

It's easy to make a sailboat with your toddler. Simply use a ball of Play Doh to stand a drinking straw up on the inside of a margarine tub lid. Cut a right-angled triangle out of construction paper for the sail, decorate it, and punch three holes along the edge. Weave the straw through the holes, and you have a new toy sailboat.

3. Paper plate masks

Making masks out of paper plates is very easy for toddlers with a little adult help. Just cut two eye holes, and punch a hole in each side. Thread some elastic through these holes and tie the ends, and let your child decorate the mask as he chooses.

4. Pipe cleaner figurines

Pipe cleaners are very easy for toddlers to work with. With a little guidance, they can use them to make all sorts of animals, people and things.

5. Coin bank

Every toddler needs a bank to put his money in. He can create his own using an empty oatmeal box or other cylindrical box with a lid. You'll need to cut a slot in the lid, but he can do most of the rest by himself. Just have him decorate a piece of construction paper (that you've cut to the right size) with markers, stickers, and other items, and help him glue it around the box.

6. Painting

Young artists love to paint. It can, however, get messy, so be sure to cover the work area with newspapers and the child's clothing with a smock. Finger painting is one of the most popular art forms among toddlers, but they also love watercolors.

Crafting is a great way for toddlers and their parents to have fun together. It's a great way to fight boredom and teach your child important skills. You can almost certainly find enough materials around the house to help your child create something, so there's no reason that your child can't craft any time he wishes to. Now you can see how easy it is to come up with kids crafts ideas to keep your toddler busy and entertained.

Crafts & Christmas - Christmas Decorations You Can Make With Your Kids

Crafts & Christmas - Christmas Decorations You Can Make With Your Kids

Crafts & Christmas can make a wonderful combination. The Christmas holidays are a wonderful time of the year, especially since the kids are home from school.Make the most of this time by making memories that will last. Creating Christmas decorations with your kids is a fun time for all.

Here are a few ideas to get you started with your crafts & Christmas fun.

1.Tree Skirt:

Find some felt material and design a tree skirt. Add beads, bows, sparkles and any kind of trim available to make this a one-of-a-kind skirt. Perhaps the kids would like to add pictures of Santa along the rim of the skirt. Another tree skirt idea would be to make a quilted pattern, using different plaids and solid colors. Decorate it with a fancy trim.It could not only be used for the tree, but as the base centerpiece for a vase of poinsettias.

2. Centerpiece:

Another idea is to have your children gather together Christmas balls in various sizes and colors. Find a large clear vase or bowl and arrange them inside. You may want to add some holly as well. This colorful display would make a lovely centerpiece for your table.

3. Christmas Card Holder:

Here is a creative idea for storing your Holiday cards.Start with an empty Kleenex (or tissue) box, and cut out the top rectangular part of it.Wrap it in Christmas paper, and use it as a Christmas card holder.Decorate it with holly and ivy. Then, attach a ribbon to both ends and you have a beautiful homemade Christmas card basket.

4. Paper Chain:

An old standby is to take several different colors of construction paper and cut them in strips. Then attach two ends of the strips together (with a stapler, glue or tape) to form a circle. Continue by looping another cut strip inside that one. When it’s long enough, wrap the chain around your Christmas tree.

5. Candy Chain:

While stringing popcorn or beads around a tree is a tried and true tradition, how about using Lifesavers candy?Your kids can choose the color order or even try to make patterns. Use different color twine or ribbons to give it a Candyland touch.Add candy canes as well.Since both candies come in their own wrapping, just use a needle through the Lifesavers wrapping. After the tree is taken down, they can be fun snacks to eat.

Christmas decorations are a great way of expressing the holiday spirit in your home.

The kids will love creating them, and be proud to have their art displayed. And, instead of looking like a department store, your home will become a reflection of the family that lives in it. This year, let Crafts & Christmas come together for a magical Christmas for the kids.

I have come across an amazing e-book to make things very easy for you during these holidays. The name of the package is Kids Christmas Activities. Do go and have a look at it, you will love it!

Christmas Décor Ideas for Kids to Make

Christmas Décor Ideas for Kids to Make

Before we move on to the décor ideas, we have added a free e-book to our All Our Recipes & More site about how to make a gingerbread house. Do visit the site and download the free e-book!

Kids love making their own Christmas decorations for their home and displaying them proudly.

Use ribbons and bows to decorate lamps, curtains and drapes.Choose different color ribbons and bows according to the colors in your home. For example, if you have white curtains, add red and green bows you can stick onto any surface, and arrange the bows on the white curtains any way you wish.

Kids may want to decorate the drapes using different sized white doilies, and fill the drapes with snowflakes. Attach green or red garland to the bottom of the drapes, and hang small light colored ornaments on the garland.

Kids can also decorate the entertainment center with candles of all colors, little glass bowls of Christmas balls, and Christmas figurines.Whether the entertainment center is wood, white or black, this is a sure way to make the entertainment center a Christmas display.

Have a coffee table? If the coffee table is glass, the kids can decorate the edge of the coffee table with garland and ornaments. Remember to choose a garland that compliments the colors in the room. Tape the garland around the table. Start with taping the garland at one corner of the table and let the garland hang a few inches. Repeat the process: tape and hang, until you have hung the garland completely around the coffee table. Then add favorite ornaments and hang them on the garland. This is a wonderful visual effect that also works on your mantel or a banister or railing, too.

Your children can create Christmas artwork with markers, paints or crayons. If you display it in a nice frame, it will complement your home décor and look like you paid money for it.

And, of course, a favorite Christmas decoration is a gingerbread house. Create a gingerbread house with your children. The gingerbread house will be a perfect display for a countertop or in the middle of your coffee table.

Choosing Christmas décor ideas for kids to make is easy; arranging them to compliment the décor of your home is the challenge.Choose the decorations, and have the kids use their imagination to turn your home into wonderland of color.

Ceramics the Whole Family Will Enjoy

Ceramics For The Whole Family To Do

Kids Crafts can be done any many different ways. Try and incorporate crafts you would not normally think of for kids.

It's so rewarding to make a ceramic piece from scratch. There's just something spectacular about watching it go from raw clay to a beautiful, finished product. It makes it hard to stop at one piece.

Getting the whole family in on the creation of ceramic groupings is a great way to bond while making something together. If each person does one or two pieces, you can end up with a nice collection or scene. Or some members can do the shaping and firing, and the others can do the painting.

Here are some ceramic projects that the whole family can participate in and enjoy and that therefore make excellent Kids Crafts:

* Nativity scenes - One of the most popular kinds of ceramic groupings for Christmas, a nativity scene is a great family project. Once the actual pieces are done, you could build a wooden barn together and add hay for added authenticity.

* Halloween groupings - There are all sorts of possibilities for Halloween. You could do a group of trick or treaters with different costumes, some whimsical ghosts, bats or spiders, or jack-o-lantern candleholders with different faces.

* Pottery - Kids are often intrigued by pottery wheels, so why not let them try their hand at using one? They may need a little help, but they can make simple pieces fairly easily. Creating a pottery grouping with coordinating pieces could be a great family project.

* Wall hangings - Groups of ceramic wall hangings make lovely decorations. Each family member could create one with a favorite quote or a hand-carved design on it. How about having each person carve a picture of his or her favorite animal or flower?

* Coasters and trivets - Coasters and trivets are quite simple to make, and they're really useful. Making a set as a family is a great project if you have young children. Handmade coasters and trivets also make nice gifts, so make several sets for the holidays.

* Refrigerator magnets - This is another easy project, because it provides a great deal of freedom. As long as the ceramic piece isn't so heavy as to weigh the magnet down, it doesn't have to be perfectly flat and doesn't matter what shape it is. Take pictures while the family is making them, and when the magnets are done, hang the pictures up with them to remind everyone how much fun it was.

Ceramic groupings and sets are fun to make, and they're even more fun when you get the whole family involved. Even young children can create simple ceramic pieces. Whether you're making them to give as gifts or keep around the house, a ceramic set made by your entire family will always be a source of fond memories.

Kids' Halloween Crafts - Balloon Toys Crafts

Kids' Halloween Crafts - Balloon Toys Crafts.

Kids' Halloween Crafts ideas!

Try and get hold of two giant balloons, one white and one black. Use them for these two Kids Halloween Crafts that you can be sure your kids will love to make. These two imaginative kids' Halloween crafts ideas we have for you turn them into unusual Halloween toys or decorations.

Ghost kids craft idea with a white balloon:

If your kids liked Casper the ghost they will enjoy this free kids' Halloween crafts idea for making an adorable little ghost as a toy or a decoration for a Halloween party. It is very simple and cute.

This Is What You Will Need:

  • A big white balloon

  • Some white plastic grocery bags

  • Clear tape

  • A black marker

  • Blunt ended or rounded scissors

Give the kids some white grocery bags and ask them to cut out strips about an inch wide by about 8 inches long, avoiding any colored parts so that the strips are all white.

Blow up the balloon, tie a secure knot in the neck to prevent the air escaping, and then hang it up with string somewhere the children can reach it easily.

Draw spooky eyes and a mouth on the balloon to make a ghost. Now the kids can stick their white strips of plastic all around the bottom end of the balloon to make a floaty ghost effect. This kid's craft idea makes a great Halloween decoration!

Scary spider Kids Halloween crafts idea with a black balloon

Make a huge black spider for Halloween with this kids' Halloween crafts idea.

This Is What You Will Need:

  • A big black balloon

  • 4 long, black pipe cleaners

  • Some white-out (liquid paper)

  • A bit of string or yarn

Blow up the balloon so that it is only partially inflated, and tie a knot in it. Then make a twist in it so that you have a big ball and a little ball. The little ball will become the spider's head and should be at the end of the balloon with the opening.

Twist each pipe cleaner around the "neck" of the spider by folding it in half over the balloon and twisting tightly. (Adult help may be needed for this bit as the pipe cleaners have sharp ends that may burst the balloon!) Twist the pipe cleaner in such a way that they resemble the legs of a spider. If you have a careful look at a spider you'll notice that all legs are on the front part of the spider.

Your spider now has eight legs! Fold each leg to make it jointed. Using the white-out, paint scary eyes and fangs on the spider's face.

These balloon crafts are popular and fun free Kids' Halloween Crafts ideas for Halloween parties.

Halloween Kids Crafts - Baking Great Halloween Cupcakes

Halloween Kids Crafts - Baking Great Halloween Cupcakes

Baking cup cakes are great Halloween Kids Crafts. You may not believe me but my little granddaughter that is only 4 years old, has amazing success with cupcakes with very little help from my side. Obviously, they are not "show" quality but very edible. With older kids you can start teaching them to bake better cupcakes.

Cupcakes are fun to make, and even more fun to eat. They're a favorite snack for Halloween parties, or to have around the house for your ghouls and goblins.

Here are some tips for making your Halloween cupcakes irresistible:

  1. Be sure to preheat the oven fully, and bake your cupcakes on the middle rack.
  2. Mix your batter carefully. Be sure not to mix longer than the mix or recipe calls for, and bring your ingredients to room temperature before you add them in. This will keep your batter from being lumpy and make your cupcakes nice and moist.
  3. Use decorative Halloween cupcake cups. These cut down on messes and add a nice touch to your finished treats. If you prefer not to use paper cups, you'll need to grease and flour each individual section of the pan.
  4. Fill each cup 2/3 full. If they're filled any higher, the cake will rise and spill over onto the pan. If not full enough, they will turn out too small.
  5. If your oven heats unevenly, turn the pan around halfway through baking.
  6. Check your cupcakes after the minimum baking time by inserting a toothpick in the middle of one. If it comes out clean, they're done. If not, they need to bake a little longer.
  7. Try pumpkin cake mix for a great Halloween flavor. This goes great with cream cheese icing!
  8. If you don't like the idea of pumpkin cupcakes but want to make them look more festive, add some food coloring to make them orange. You'll have to experiment to get the right shade. In yellow cupcakes, a dash of red may be all that's needed. If you're using white cake mix, you'll need to add orange (or red and yellow). Add a drop at a time and mix well until you get the color you want.

Halloween Kids Crafts - Cup Cake Decorating Ideas:

  1. Orange frosting is great for making your cupcakes look like pumpkins. You could add black frosting accents to make a jack-o-lantern face, or stick a small piece of green licorice in the middle to make the entire cupcake resemble a small pumpkin.
  2. Use a fine-tipped frosting applicator to draw spooky designs on your frosted cupcakes. Spiders, spider webs and ghosts are quick and easy to draw.
  3. Break oval-shaped cookies in half to make tombstones. Stick them upright in the frosting, and write "R.I.P" on them in a contrasting frosting color. This looks especially good with green or brown icing for the "ground."
  4. Top your cupcakes with creepy candies. Gummy worms, candy bones, and chocolate monsters are favorites of kids.
  5. Make spider cupcakes. Use black licorice to make eight legs, and add any kind of small round candies (or use frosting) for the eyes.

These are only a few ideas to get busy in the kitchen with the kids for Halloween Kids Crafts.

Kids Halloween Crafts - Halloween Beaded Jewelry

Kids Halloween Crafts - Halloween Beaded Jewelry

Kids love dressing up in full costume for Halloween. Remember, very important, that the perfect costume isn't complete without the right accessories! Why not make some beaded jewelry to finish the look? This is one of our really fun Kids Halloween Crafts.

1. Beginners Halloween Beaded Crafts:

There are plenty of simple beaded jewelry pieces that do not require a great deal of skill. You can whip these up in no time, and they can add lots of punch to your costume (or even an everyday outfit). You don't even have to go by a pattern if you don't want to.

Here's what you'll need to make a simple beaded bracelet:

  • Elastic thread
  • Medium sized beads
  • Scissors

This is what you have to do:

  • Cut a piece of elastic about 10 inches long.
  • Tie a knot in one end large enough to prevent the beads from falling off.
  • Then add beads as you like, either randomly or in a pattern that you like.
  • Once you've added enough beads to make the bracelet the right size for your wrist tie the ends together and cut off the excess string.

You can find lots of Halloween themed beads at your local craft store or online. Bat, ghost, and skull beads are great for making fun Halloween bracelets. You can also use this technique to make beaded necklaces. Just decide how long you want your necklace to be, and use a piece of elastic that is 2 to 4 inches longer than that.

2. For The Older Ones - More Advanced Techniques

a. You can also make some nice Halloween pieces by doing bead weaving:

This is often done on a loom, but it can be done by hand as well. It can produce a flat, fabric-like piece, or a three-dimensional piece. Bead weaving requires certain stitches and knots, but it's not that difficult to learn.

Bead weaving is a general term that encompasses a number of beading techniques. Some more specific types of bead weaving include beadpoint, bead embroidery, bead crochet, and needleweaving. All of these can be used to create great Halloween jewelry. Bead weaving is great for making spider earrings and pendants.

b. Another beading technique is wire wrapping.

This involves placing beads on jewelry wire and bending the wire into decorative shapes. Certain tools are required, including a flush cutter, round nose pliers, and bent nose pliers. There are also other tools that are used to do certain techniques and to make wire wrapping easier.

Wire wrapping is great for making bracelets, earrings and pendants. You can use all sorts of fun Halloween beads to make a bold and unique piece. Why not make a matching set?

3. Beaded jewelry can add some splash to any Halloween costume.

It's also great for wearing anywhere you want to show your Halloween spirit but can't wear a costume. You don't have to be an expert to create nice pieces. All you need is some elastic thread, beads and your imagination to get started.

Doing Kids Halloween Crafts is a fun way to spend time with the kids and keep them safe at home.
